Paddy Barry’s Irish pub in Quincy hits the road
Discover how Gerry Hanley is keeping the spirit of Quincy’s Paddy Barry’s alive with a unique mobile pub experience inside a converted shuttle bus.
Ray Lin said his new restaurant serving Chinese street food and live music brings something unique to downtown Quincy.
Lin’s new restaurant 8+1 BBQ Livehouse recently opened at 16 Cottage Ave., replacing 16C, which closed late last year after nine years in business.
“Its a great place for Asian culture to have a place like this,” said Lin, who has been working in restaurants since high school. “This concept, we’ve been thinking about it for a couple of years and we made sure we got the idea right, and the location popped up and we had the chance to acquire it.”
Lin said the name 8+1 symbolizes the shapes of a guitar and a skewer stick, which are the premises of the restaurant. He said the location is great due to its proximity to other bars and restaurants.
He and his business partners did a full renovation inside the restaurant before opening last month.
Restaurant serves ‘traditional Chinese street food’
Lin said the menu is Chinese BBQ, and includes many items served on kebabs. Some of the options on the menu include grilled lamb, beef, pork belly and chicken thighs.
“It’s mainly on skewers that we grill,” he said. “It’s very traditional Chinese street food.”
The menu also features foil pots with seafood like clams, oysters or jumbo shrimp.
“It’s a type of seafood dish and in China they put a foil pot on the grill so it’s easy to cook on the street,” Lin said.

The restaurant also offers wine, beer, sake and a cocktail menu, as well as $1 oysters every night.
Free live music offered throughout the week
Lin said the restaurant hosts free live music throughout the week and a stage ready for performances. He said many of the acts are students at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
“They love to perform and we have singers who are trying to get some stage experience,” he said. “It’s a relaxing place to come and have fun.”
