Fighting cancer rocks!
Inspired by the success of the Carbon County Labor Day weekend event “Zoostock,” an American Cancer Society benefit dubbed “Skookstock” will be held this weekend.
The first annual Skookstock will feature five hours of live local music beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Frackville Elks Lodge, 307 S. Third St., Frackville. Admission is $10.
Lori Kane, an American Cancer Society volunteer and one of the hosts of the annual American Cancer Society Telethon of Eastern PA, said that it makes sense to hold an ACS fundraiser in Schuylkill County because the Yuengling brewery in Pottsville was one of the key remote broadcast sites of the telethon.
“The Frackville Elks is a pretty happening place,” said Kane, who will be the emcee for Skookstock.
If the public response to the Frackville Elks’ initial Facebook post announcing Skookstock is any indication, there’s a good deal of interest in the event: 237 likes and 134 shares as of Thursday morning.
Area bands will be performing one-hour sets throughout the evening. The entertainment includes Sakes Alive, a group that covers a range of rock ‘n’ roll from the ’50s to now, at 4 p.m.; acoustic classic rock from JFK at 5 p.m.; Another Side, a “vocal-oriented” classic rock band, at 6 p.m.; acoustic rock duo Waiting for Eyes at 7 p.m., and Ricky and the Ricardos, a “high energy” rock band, at 8 p.m.
“It’s all the different genres of music that people like,” Kane said.
Food and beverages will be available and there will be a 50-50 and raffles. Raffle tickets will be $2 or three for $5.
According to Kane, 100 volunteers will be on hand to support the inaugural event.
