Fresh off co-writing the Barbie movie, one of the biggest box office draws of the 2020s so far with wife Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach returns to his directing ways with his new film Jay Kelly. The film features an all-star ensemble headlined by George Clooney and Adam Sandler.
This will be Baumbach’s fourth film released for Netflix since signing a multi-year exclusivity deal with the streaming service back in 2021. Baumbach also co-wrote the film with actress Emily Mortimer, who stars in the film as well.
Synopsis for the film reads: “Famous movie actor Jay Kelly embarks on a journey of self-discovery, confronting his past and present with his devoted manager Ron. Poignant and humor-filled, pitched at the intersection of regrets and glories.”
The trailer alone has me excited for what the duo of Adam Sandler and George Clooney will do together on screen. Both actors have had their fair share of hits and misses over the past few years, but Sandler, without a doubt, has had more hits and standout roles/performances than Clooney.
George Clooney has been no stranger at the Academy Awards. He has been nominated for seven Oscars, including best adapted screenplay for “Ides of March,” which he filmed in Cincinnati and Oxford in 2011.
George Clooney really hasn’t had his ‘moment’ yet in the 2020s. Not that Clooney has to (since he’s certainly more than well-established and a household name), but for an actor that will live on in immortality, Clooney hasn’t had his last run in the sun if you may say. That could certainly change with this performance in Jay Kelly. I’m calling it now: this will be George Clooney’s best movie since Gravity and maybe his best one ever as a lead.
Jay Kelly releases in select theaters on November 14, then on Netflix on December 5.
