Nobody Can Stop Calling It the SAG Awards. Hollywood Showed Up for the Red Carpet Anyway

The 32nd Actor Awards stream live tonight on Netflix. If you just called them the SAG Awards, you are not alone. Even Kristen Bell, back as host for the third time and now the face of this rebrand by default, has acknowledged there have been plenty of slip-ups. Everyone keeps reaching for the old name first, then catching themselves.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards were officially renamed the Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA, aligning the show’s title with its trophy and emphasizing its unique pitch: actors voting on actors. Noble. Logical. And apparently impossible to say without muscle memory dragging everyone back.
The Actor’s Red Carpet pre-show streams live at 7 p.m. ET on Netflix. The main ceremony follows at 8 p.m. ET.

The Dress Code Nobody Saw Coming

For the first time in the show’s history, tonight comes with an official red carpet dress code: Reimagining Hollywood Glamour from the ’20s and ’30s. People don’t watch awards shows for fashion themes. They watch for two reasons. Validation and revenge. The dress code just gives them a third.

When there are rules, breaking them becomes a statement. Following them becomes a competition. And the theme is a cheat code for the nostalgia Hollywood sells best. Art Deco, old-school silhouettes, everyone cosplaying as a legend, even if the show itself is still trying to convince the room what to call it.

What’s Actually at Stake

The Actor Awards matter because actors make up the Academy’s largest voting branch. This is the last major precursor before the Oscars. A final poll of the people whose votes actually decide Oscar night.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another leads tonight’s film nominations with seven, after wins at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Saturday’s Producers Guild Awards. It is the kind of film that racks up praise across the circuit until it starts to feel inevitable. The moment when voters begin congratulating themselves for being the kind of people who vote for it.

Then there is Sinners with five nominations and enough heat to make the night interesting. If One Battle After Another wins big, the industry gets the comfort of stability. If Sinners pulls an upset, the Oscars race stops feeling settled and starts feeling alive. The ensemble prize is where that verdict lands. It is not just a trophy. It is the room declaring what kind of year it wants to be.

The lead actor field sharpens the tension. Leonardo DiCaprio is in for One Battle After Another. Michael B. Jordan is up for Sinners. Timothée Chalamet is nominated for Marty Supreme. Ethan Hawke and Jesse Plemons are also in the mix. Career arcs. Comeback arcs. One win can become an Oscars storyline before the night is over.
The supporting categories are built to start arguments. Ariana Grande is nominated for Wicked: For Good, and any time a pop megastar enters the acting conversation, the same fight breaks out: is it real acting or campaign gravity.

Kristen Bell, Harrison Ford, and the Emotional Center

Bell has been clear about her hosting approach. She does not roast. If anyone is getting roasted, it’s her. She wants it light, goofy, and welcoming. She has also confirmed she will be singing. A delightful surprise or a warning, depending on your feelings about awards-show musical bits.

The emotional anchor of the evening is Harrison Ford receiving the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award. In the announcement of the honor, SAG-AFTRA praised Ford as a singular presence in American life, with characters that have shaped world culture. Ford accepting that award in a room full of working actors, on the first night of the show’s new name, is the kind of moment that cuts through ceremony noise.

How To Watch

The Actor’s Red Carpet pre-show streams live on Netflix, hosted by Paige DeSorbo and Scott Evans. Main ceremony at 8 p.m. ET, exclusively on Netflix. In the U.S., Netflix plans start at $7.99 per month for the ad-supported tier.

The fashion, the slip-ups, the lead actor race, Harrison Ford, and Kristen Bell trying to reset everyone’s muscle memory in real time. Tonight has more texture than most awards ceremonies manage to generate.

The real question isn’t who wins. It’s whether an industry that can’t stop calling this the SAG Awards is ready to let go. Or whether Kristen Bell spends three hours politely correcting people on live television while pretending that’s not exactly what’s happening.
