Over the years, Norman Rockwell’s artwork has really grown on me, to the point that he’s become one of my favorite artists to date. It also helps that he isn’t insanely problematic, as artists go.
There are some criticisms of his earlier work for depicting an idealized, almost exclusively white, suburban America. But this was also during the time when he was working for the Saturday Evening Post, where he was prohibited by his editors from drawing Black people as central figures.
Some of his more iconic artwork from the Civil Rights Movement, like “The Problem We All Live With,” came after he left the Post and joined Life magazine, where he had more creative freedom.
