MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – On this day in 1969, a new entertainment district soon known as Overton Square was unveiled one day after voters approved liquor-by-the-drink.
Modeled after hotspots in New York and San Francisco, the district officially opened in 1970 with TGI Friday’s and later grew into a hub featuring Bombay Bicycle Club, Paulette’s, Lafayette’s Music Room and more.
After decline in the 1980s and preservation battles in the 2000s, Loeb Properties transformed it into a modern theater arts district in 2011.
