In what’s shaping up to be a project on the horizon, LA-based artist Pool Girl has dropped her latest single, “Blue Robotic.”
The song happened to drop around the time Allie Nixon, one half of duo Little Jet and the singer-songwriter behind Pool Girl, signed with Warner Chappell Music, just one of many big developments in her career since debuting last year.
While her breakout single, “I liked it,” was a sun-drenched track full of synths, “Blue Robotic” revels in its wavy production and meditative contemplation.
“This song is about sometimes wishing you could escape the inevitable pains of what it means to be human,” said Nixon on Instagram. “Fantasizing that maybe the depths of the ocean are somehow lighter and more bearable than what’s going on at the surface.”
At the same time, Nixon’s radio-friendly sound and penchant for putting together earworm melodies are stronger than ever. However, what separates “Blue Robotic” from previous tracks is its jittery nature, punctuated by sudden bursts of electronic catharsis teased by the synths dotted throughout.
And despite coming in at less than three minutes, the sudden shifts mean Nixon gets to play with the pacing and challenge listeners’ expectations before the end of “Blue Robotic.” It’s a testament to her songwriting that parallels her fast-growing journey, which has the potential to blow up soon.
