Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be preparing for a high-profile return to the U.K., but not everyone in the royal family is reportedly eager for a reunion.
Now, it’s fairly obvious that Prince William and Kate Middleton will not be leading the way, but there’s another member of the palace who is steering clear of the Sussexes, according to the Daily Express. Queen Camilla “plans to deliberately avoid them from her Ray Mill home in Wiltshire,” per the media outlet’s columnist Carole Malone on the Daily Expresso show.
While King Charles appears to be welcoming the couple with open arms to Buckingham Palace with their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, in tow, the rest of the immediate royal family will be out of sight. It’s not surprising to see Camilla hightail it out of town because Harry made it pretty clear in his 2023 memoir, Spare, that he was not a fan.
The Duke of Sussex revealed that he and his elder brother tried to talk Charles out of marrying Camilla, which was understandable given the messy history of the love triangle with their dad, his mistress, and their late mother, Princess Diana.
“Despite Willy and me urging him not to, Pa was going ahead. We pumped his hand, wished him well. No hard feelings,” he wrote in the book. “We recognized that he was finally going to be with the woman he loved, the woman he’d always loved.”
While that interaction seemed peaceful, Harry also told 60 Minutes in 2023 that he believed Camilla was in cahoots with the British tabloids to repair her public image — she gave them a royal scoop in exchange for positive press.
“There was open willingness on both sides to trade information. And with a family built on hierarchy, and with her on the way to being Queen Consort, there were going to be people or bodies left in the street,” he said in the interview while describing Queen Camilla as “dangerous” and “the villain.”
The Duke of Sussex probably won’t ever have a warm relationship with Camilla, given the circumstances over the decades, but he does have a “huge amount of compassion for her.”
“She’s my stepmother. I don’t look at her as an evil stepmother,” he told Good Morning America in 2023, “I see someone who married into this institution and has done everything that she can to improve her own reputation and her own image for her own sake.”
