Prince Harry has announced a $1.5 million donation to a British children’s charity during a visit in England in a rare move for a royal.

The Duke of Sussex cut the check for £1.1 million to Children in Need from his personal funds, not as a grant from his Archewell Foundation.

The money will go primarily to organizations in Nottingham “that create opportunities, nurture potential and help young people build brighter futures,” according to a news release.

Why It Matters

Financial donations from royals are not unheard of, but their efforts to do good predominantly focus on turning up in support rather than giving cash.

In that respect, Harry’s announcement of a large, specific monetary donation has the potential to be awkward for the royals.

What To Know

Harry announced the donation as he turned out to support a range of charities at Community Recording Studio in Nottingham on Tuesday.

He said in a statement: “The incredible work being done by grassroots organizations like CRS and Epic Partners is not only inspiring—it’s essential.

“We’re grateful for the support of BBC Children in Need in helping changemakers in the city continue their mission to create safe spaces, build trust, and offer hope and belonging to young people who need it most.”

While royal aides would surely offer no objection to such a donation to a good cause, they might raise an eyebrow at its potential to spark comparisons between the philanthropic activities of different family members.

Of course, royals have given specific sums to charity before. For instance, Prince William and Princess Kate gave £3,500, or about $4,260, to a London food bank that was robbed in 2024.

The Prince and Princess of Wales did not disclose the sum themselves. Instead, the charity, Pecan, told People the amount.

Another charitable endeavor William is involved in is the Earthshot Prize, which gives out grants of £1 million each to five projects a year that offer innovative solutions to climate change.

The prize, which the royal launched in 2020, is set to run for 10 years, meaning it will have awarded £50 million by its conclusion. The Earthshot is backed by a host of strategic funding partners, and the money does not come directly from William’s account.

In 2023, William also launched Homewards, a project to tackle homelessness.

On Tuesday, @KensingtonRoyal, the X account for William and Kate, wrote about funding that the project has provided to a youth inclusion charity: “Homewards is providing funding to the brilliant @Spiralskills in Brixton, whose team use lived experience and consistency to provide support, employment, training and opportunities for young people locally.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell Foundation gives out grants in a similar way.

What People Are Saying

Tony Okotie, the director of impact at BBC Children in Need, said in a statement: “We are incredibly grateful to the Duke of Sussex for this generous donation. Youth work is a lifeline for many young people.

“It makes up around 30 percent of the projects that we support at BBC Children in Need. So this funding will help us reach even more communities where young people are ready to be heard and supported.

“Together, we can create spaces where young people feel safe, heard, and empowered to build brighter futures.”

What Happens Next

Harry’s U.K. visit continues on Wednesday with engagements in London in support of blast victims.

It remains to be seen whether he will see his father, King Charles III, during his time in Britain. While no announcement has been made, the U.K. press has reported that Charles is flying to London from Scotland.
