Prince Harry was issued a warning not to marry Meghan Markle by the late Prince Philip after they announced their engagement, according to a royal expert.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared their engagement news in November 2017 after a year of dating. While the couple were no doubt excited to start planning their royal wedding, it seems not everyone was happy.
Writing in his book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, historian Andrew Lownie alleged Phillip warned Harry, “One steps out with actresses, one doesn’t marry them.”
Philip’s apparent reservations about Meghan were also echoed by royal commentator Ingrid Seward. In her book My Mother And I, Seward suggested Philip was “one of the very few wary” of being charmed by the former Suits actress.
It’s believed Philip thought Meghan reminded him of Wallis Simpson – the American socialite who King Edward VIII abdicated to marry.
The Duke of Edinburgh, who died in 2021 at age 99, is believed to have nicknamed Meghan “DOW” after Wallis, with the initials standing for the Duchess of Windsor.
And it seems Philip wasn’t the only person who was wary about Harry marrying Meghan. His brother Prince William is also believed to have been “nervous” before the big royal wedding.
Writing in his memoir Spare, the Duke of Sussex discussed William’s concerns. “‘It’s too fast,’ he’d told me,” Harry recalled.
Harry also said his brother told him it was “too soon” for the wedding to take place. “In fact, he’d actually been pretty discouraging about me even dating Meg,” the Duke of Sussex shared.
A source echoed these suggestions, telling People Magazine in 2019 that William left Harry “angry and hurt” after telling his brother things were moving too quickly. William himself had dated Kate Middleton for about eight years before their royal wedding took place.
However, Harry later clarified his comments about William, telling ITV News’ Tom Bradby, “He never tried to dissuade me from marrying Megan, but he aired some concerns, very early on and said, you know, this is gonna be really hard for you.”
Harry continued, “I still to this day, I don’t truly understand which part of what he was talking about. But maybe, you know, maybe he predicted what the British press’ reaction was gonna be.”
Harry and Meghan married in May 2018 before stepping away from the royal family two years later. They now live in Montecito, California, with their two children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
