The start of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was a magical time in the beginning of their journey together, but keeping in touch away from the public eye was no easy challenge. When the pair first met, it was tricky for them to continue seeing each other without becoming headline news. As a member of the royal family, Prince Harry did not have a personal social media account, but he decided to make a secret one.
The prince made a profile called Spike Wells to use as a “clandestine” account, reports The List. The Facebook profile is now deactivated but it was not the only sneaky account that the royal had. Prince Harry has also been on Instagram under the handle @SpikeyMau5, and used it to stay in touch with Meghan Markle in the early days of their relationship.
“A big house music fan, he crafted the pseudonym by using part of the name of one of his favorite DJs, DeadMau5,” wrote royal biographers in Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand in their book, Finding Freedom, reports Harper’s Bazaar.
Spikey reportedly came from “Spike” was a nickname sometimes used for the prince, particularly by Scotland Yard officers.
“Meghan and I met over Instagram,” Harry says.
“I was scrolling through my feed, and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them, like a snapchat…I was like ‘who is that?'”
That friend, who remains nameless, then reached out to Meghan to see if she might like to meet “Prince Haz.”
“I asked if I could see his feed,” Meghan says. “That’s the thing when people say did you Google him? No, but I [moves her hands as if she’s swiping] that’s your homework. You’re like, ‘Hmm, let me see what they’re about in their feed.’ Not what someone else says about them, but what they are putting out about themselves. That to me was the best barometer. So I went through and it was just beautiful photography and all these environmental shots, and this time he was spending in Africa.”
The couple first met in 2016 on a blind date which was set up by a friend – they married in 2018.
