Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly booted out of Frogmore Cottage in Home Park, Windsor, following a two-word slight aimed at Queen Consort Camilla.
King Charles removed his son and daughter-in-law from the residence that had been presented to them by the late Queen Elizabeth II, with the monarch reportedly believing Harry had “crossed a line” back in March 2023.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have acknowledged they have been “requested to vacate” their UK residence in a development that has allegedly left them “stunned.” Two additional royals had been left “appalled.” It came before ‘disturbed’ William got angry with Meghan Markle over the missing Diana diamonds.
Sources indicated the King was furious over a series of Harry’s claims in his contentious memoir, particularly his criticisms of his wife, reports the Mirror.
There were more than 60 references to Camilla in Spare – and the Duke of Sussex does not conceal his distaste for ‘the Other Woman’. But his especially harsh remarks concerned her becoming his “wicked stepmother.” Near the beginning of the book, Harry describes what life was like following his mother, Princess Diana’s death and how his father, King Charles, started to move forward.
Harry says he detected the presence of ‘the Other Woman’, and that his brother, Prince William, long held suspicions about her which puzzled and troubled him.
After employing the phrase four times in half a page, Harry ultimately discloses that ‘the Other Woman’ is in fact Queen Consort Camilla. Harry once wondered whether she would become his ‘wicked stepmother’ and claims she would sacrifice others to secure her position on the throne – even converting his bedroom into her personal dressing room.
He alleged that he and William pleaded with Charles not to marry Camilla, though they promised to welcome her into the family.
The Duke of Sussex admitted he ultimately just wanted Camilla to be content so she would pose less of a “dangerous” threat. During a TV interview, Harry said: “She was the villain. She was the third person in their marriage. She needed to rehabilitate her image.”
Palace insiders have suggested Charles acted swiftly after receiving a report from advisers detailing revelations from the bombshell book. A source said: “It was the last straw. Harry was well aware how Camilla would be a red line for his father and he crossed with flagrant disregard anyway.
“The King felt without a doubt it crossed a line – it was the ultimate act of disrespect.” One Royal commentator believes Charles has defied the wishes of his late mother the Queen, who attempted to maintain Harry’s inclusion – adding that the “optics are terrible.”
Royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop told the Mirror: “Britain’s response to the news has, on the whole, been gleeful. On one level the vitriol is understandable.
“Prince Harry had just lobbed several verbal hand grenades at his family and the former institution to which he belonged. But he did so from a position of weakness, on the outside, in pain and feeling side-lined.
“A broad-shouldered confident monarchy would have weathered the storm. With a coronation around the corner, the King has bigger fish to fry.
“Instead, by evicting the couple from the Queen’s generous gift of Frogmore Cottage King Charles is going directly against the conciliatory style of Her late Majesty.” Is it fair that Harry and Meghan have been evicted from Frogmore?
“Worse, he has conflated the problem of the Sussexes with that of Prince Andrew by asking the latter to relinquish his larger home, the Royal Lodge, and move into Frogmore Cottage. Big mistake. The optics are terrible.”
Despite acknowledging that British public sentiment may favor the King’s decision, Tessa believes the action could undermine the monarchy mere weeks ahead of the Coronation.
She continued: “The late Queen tried hard to keep Harry on board. Frogmore Cottage was part of that package. She was likewise lenient with Andrew.
“Charles, in his effort to stamp authority on his reign, has undone those efforts, and by conflating the separate issues of Harry and Andrew through the prism of Frogmore Cottage it looks like our King cares more for his disgraced brother, than his conflicted son and foreign daughter-in-law.
“The court of mainstream public opinion may currently be on the King’s side, but internationally this move diminishes our monarchy just weeks before invitations go out to Britain’s biggest state ceremony of 2023, the coronation.
“An event where you can now look forward to seeing Prince Andrew, but probably not the Sussexes.”
It comes after Kate ‘laughed’ at a ‘petty’ Meghan Markle move.
