Motorists must now follow a roundabout detour to get to the site. It’s reported that two Royal security officers are stationed in the parking lot during business hours. One local resident remarked, “I have already seen a few near misses where people have driven the wrong side of the cones.”
Graham Smith, chief executive of the anti-monarchy campaign group Republic, also questioned whether the Royal couple should have the power to change access routes on public land. He told Newsweek: “The Christmas trees issue might seem silly, but the point is this is all public property and William should not have been able to close those roads and close access to that land.”
He further commented: “This is just another example of William essentially giving the cold shoulder to local folks and seizing land that isn’t his, all for the sake of moving from one house to another. To me, it’s nothing more than an abuse of power and privilege.”
The relationship between the Wales family and their neighbors was already strained. Prior to the couple’s move to Forest Lodge in November, the surrounding area was frequently utilized by locals.
Since then, the area has been fortified with cameras, barricades, and a 150-acre no-go zone.
One local resident shared with The Telegraph: “I’m totally in favor of protecting the Royal family against fools who might try to shoot at them or take photographs.
“But the house is very far away, they’ve put a huge fence around it, and there are lots of cameras in the fields. We’re not impressed, I’m afraid.”
Worries were also voiced in September when rumors emerged that several tenants living near the lodge had been asked to leave their homes.
An inside source revealed to the Daily Mail: “They were not expecting it. Those houses are very close to the lodge, so they’re not going to want any Tom, Dick, or Harry living in those houses if there are going to be royals there.”
Once the location is officially designated under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005, public access to the area is anticipated to be permanently restricted.
