In a rare TV appearance on The Relucant Traveler, Prince William opened up to host, Eugene Levy, about his younger brother, Prince Harry. The October 3 episode doubled as a reintroduction for the heir to the throne after years of headlines surrounding family rifts and the fallout from the departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after quitting royal duties.
In a reference to media speculation during their childhood, William said: “I hope we don’t go back to some of the practices in the past that Harry and I had to grow up in. And I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation.”
Commenting on the reference to Harry, royal historian, Robert Lacey told People Magazine: “They are clearly part of the past.He talked about his brother in the past, as part of his life — not in the future.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s seismic step back from royal life in 2020 exposed a deep family rift – particularly after the couple appeared in an interview with Oprah Winfrey and aired a docuseries on Netflix speaking about their time as working royals.
The Reluctant Traveler host, Eugene Levy, says nothing was off-limits when he met Prince William in Windsor, including the mention of Harry and Meghan, but he chose not to explore the topic.
“I was not told I couldn’t ask anything,” he told reporters. “But I had no interest in asking… It’s a very delicate issue.”
However, royal biographer Andrew Morton, author of Winston and the Windsors, said: “If you want the prince to talk openly, you avoid asking about his brother.”
The Prince of Wales also opened up in the interview about how 2024 was one of the hardest of his life after two of his loved ones were diagnosed with cancer.
Prince William told the former actor: “I’d say 2024 was the hardest year I’ve ever had. You know, life is sent to test us as well, and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are.”
Princess Kate and his father, King Charles, both announced they were diagnosed with cancer last year, with Kate announcing her diagnosis in March 2024 in a video shared to social media, in which she described receiving the news as a “huge shock”.
