Sources say Prince Edward’s wife Sophie Wessex is being primed for a much bigger role once Prince William and Princess Kate take over the throne from King Charles III.
“William has huge respect for Sophie and he’s leaning on her more and more these days,” an insider says of the future king, 43. “She was someone the late Queen Elizabeth II trusted completely and William says he can totally understand why.”
Despite marrying into the royal family, “she takes her role very seriously,” Examiner’s insider notes, “more seriously than a lot of the family members born in it.”
It also helps that, unlike Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, the Duchess of Edinburgh, 61, “never causes drama” for the royals, the insider adds.
“When William thinks about what the monarchy will look like when he and Kate eventually take over, Sophie is front and center,” says the insider. “He sees her as an ally and so does Kate. She fully supports giving [Sophie] more responsibility and letting her take some of the weight.”

Not everyone in the royal family feels that way, though.
William’s decision to expand Sophie’s role has raised the hackles of Queen Camilla, reveals the insider. “She feels very threatened.”
It’s also caused yet more upheaval between the Queen Consort, 78, and Kate, 44.
As Examiner previously reported, they have never gotten along but Camilla is being openly combative now.
“She has fought hard to secure her place and doesn’t appreciate the idea of Sophie being groomed to push her out,” says the insider, “and she’s blaming Kate for it as much as William.”
