In 1997, it was reported that the late Queen had bought a seven-bedroom mansion in Surrey for Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie to use when they got older. The home, worth £1.5million at the time, came with five acres of land.
The mansion, known as Birch Hall, also had a tennis court and swimming pool – a very cool present to receive.
While the late Queen’s gift was well-intentioned, the princesses never got to use it.
This is because the mansion had high maintenance costs, which meant their mother, Sarah Ferguson, never wanted to live in it, even after she divorced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in 1992.
This was not believed to have been a decision made by the princesses, who at the time were just 10 and nine.
However, they benefited from the sale, with the proceeds placed in a trust for the princesses.
It is not known when they received the money.
It is also not known if she will celebrate with her parents, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, who have spent the last few months facing scandal after scandal.
