Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie’s visible participation with Royal Family Christmas traditions at Sandringham in December visibly aligned them with the monarchy, despite their parents spending Christmas privately at Royal Lodge in Windsor. Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 35, joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Catherine and the wider royals for the famous walk to St Mary Magdalene Church.
A family friend of the Royal Family spoke about the York sisters’ commitment to the Firm in seven words. They said: “They live and die by the monarchy.”
Speaking of their participation, they added: “This didn’t surprise me at all. And Andrew and Sarah would have 1,000 per cent supported it.”
Royal biographer Robert Jobson agrees that it was the right move for Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie to honour King Charles’s invitation.
Speaking to People Magazine, he said: “They did the right thing – showing loyalty to King Charles and to the Crown. It’s easy to say this is a snub, but they would say, ‘I’m a royal princess, I’m in line to the throne, I have been invited to attend the King’s Christmas celebrations, and you don’t turn down the King’s invitation.”
He added: “If you have an invitation, you go. It’s not an invitation – it’s a command, really.”
Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, were not expected to join the royals at Christmas in Sandringham in December amid the recent scandal of his titles being stripped and revived spotlight on his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The American financier died in prison while awaiting federal sex trafficking charges in August 2019.
As Beatrice and Eugenie spent Christmas apart from their parents, the holiday was also Andrew’s last at Royal Lodge. The former Duke of York and his ex-wife were ordered to vacate the residence and it is reported Andrew will move to the Sandringham Estate, privately funded for by the King.
Despite the fallout around their father, it is understood that Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s royal titles and position remain wholly unaffected.
