Nocturnal Entertainment, a film and television financier and production company, has officially launched following the sale of its first feature, “Play Dead,” to Netflix.

Nocturnal Entertainment was built to support filmmakers, providing them with a technology-enabled creative suite, engaging with them early on in the creative process and staying closely involved throughout. Led by producers Keaton Heinrichs and Akiva Nemetsky, the company focuses on producing and backing studio-quality concepts while embracing the speed, control, flexibility and price point of the independent model.

Fully financed by Nocturnal, “Play Dead,” a World War II thriller, was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. Noah Jupe (“Hamnet”) and Matthias Schweighöfer (“Oppenheimer”) both star in the film.

“‘Play Dead’ reflects how we’re built to operate,” said Heinrichs and Nemetsky. “We back bold swings, period. Our job is to give filmmakers both the runway and the safety net to workshop ambitious ideas early, then execute them with modern production tools in a way that is both cinematic and disciplined.”

The company will also focus on actively developing material for partners across the entertainment marketplace, including studios, filmmakers and streamers. Nocturnal Entertainment will maintain a strategic relationship with the Los Angeles Times and have access to its intellectual property; more updates on the partnership will be shared soon.

NantStudios, Nocturnal’s sister company, will provide filmmakers with access to “cutting-edge previsualization tools and advanced virtual production infrastructure,” per the company, including Los Angeles and Melbourne soundstages “equipped for performance capture, in-camera VFX and motion control.”

“By working closely with productions to take advantage of the more streamlined and efficient workflow offered by the Unreal Engine, we can provide filmmakers with a suite of visualization and virtual production tools that empower them to make informed decisions early on in the process,” said Heinrichs and Nemetsky. “As financial pressures on creative teams increase, we want to provide a creative environment that reduces off-screen costs and invests in on-screen creativity and quality.”

The company’s next project is set to shoot on their technologically-advanced stages in Melbourne, Australia this fall.
