Ipsos in the UK has released its latest polling results on the perception of the British Royal Family among the UK public. Fieldwork was conducted 20-21 October 2025, just after the announcement he would stop using his official title.

Prince Andrew

  • Widespread support for Prince Andrew no longer using his titles: An overwhelming majority of Britons (88%) think it was definitely or probably the right decision for Prince Andrew to no longer use his official titles.
  • Is an Act of Parliament necessary? Half (51%) of Britons think there should be an Act of Parliament to formally remove Prince Andrew’s titles, while 36% say that it is not necessary as he has already said that he will not use them. 2% believe that he should not have to relinquish his titles at all, while 12% don’t know.
  • Fall in approval ratings: Eight in ten (82%) of Britons have an unfavourable opinion of Prince Andrew. This is up 14 percentage points from polling conducted from October 10-13, before he renounced his titles.  Just 5% are favourable, down 6ppts. This is Prince Andrew’s worst public favourability rating since the series started in early 2022.
  • Criticism of Royal Family for handling of the situation: Two in five (43%) Britons believe that the Royal Family have handled the situation with Prince Andrew badly since allegations were first made against him (23% well, 23% neither well nor badly).
  • Level of public awareness: Just over half (55%) of Britons say they have been following recent news stories about Prince Andrew no longer using his official titles closely. However, this is lower than the 81% who say they have been following stories about the rising cost of living, and 61% who say they are following stories about potential changes to tax and public spending in the upcoming Autumn Budget.

Other

  • Support for the monarchy remains stable: Two in five Britons (40%) believe abolishing the monarchy would be worse for the country, while 21% think it would be better, and 29% see no difference. These figures have been relatively consistent over the year.
  • Favourability ratings for the Royal Family outside of Prince Andrew remain stable and have not changed much since the news broke that Prince Andrew will stop using his titles.
    • The Prince and Princess of Wales remain the most popular royals, with favourability ratings of 69% and 66%, respectively.
    • They are followed by Princess Anne at 61%.
    • Half of Britons have a favourable opinion of the Royal Family as a whole (50%), as well as King Charles (51%).
    • A third (33%) are favourable towards Queen Camilla.
    • Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, hold favourability ratings of 28% and 17% respectively.

Commenting on the findings, Gideon Skinner, Senior Director of UK Politics at Ipsos, said:

These findings underscore a critical moment for the British Royal Family in the court of public opinion. Prince Andrew’s already low favourability ratings have sunk even further, and there is widespread support for him renouncing his official titles.  Half the public also want to see parliamentary intervention to formally remove his titles, although there is slightly more nuance here, with 1 in 3 believing it isn’t necessary. These results also reflect some criticism of the Royal Family’s handling of the issue, indicating the challenges they face in navigating public perception. However, despite the turbulence surrounding Prince Andrew, it is slightly better news for the Palace that so far at least overall support for the monarchy remains relatively stable, which they will need to continue to monitor closely in the future.

Technical note

  • Ipsos interviewed a representative sample of 1,036 adults aged 18-75 across Great Britain. Polling was conducted online between the 20th-21st October 2025.
  • Data are weighted to match the profile of the population. All polls are subject to a wide range of potential sources of error.
