Some royal watchers aren’t too happy about Queen Camilla’s recent photo with author J.K. Rowling.
“With a shared passion for books and a deep commitment to children reading for pleasure, The Queen and author J.K. Rowling have met at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh,” the royal family’s official Instagram account shared via Instagram on Tuesday, June 30. “Her Majesty and Ms Rowling discussed the importance of ensuring that young people have access to books and the vital part reading plays in opening doors for future generations.”
Camilla, 78, is known to meet with authors as part of The Queen’s Reading Room, a charity launched in 2023 to “to celebrate and promote the power and benefits of reading, in the UK and beyond.”
However, Rowling’s meeting with the queen has sparked major backlash against the royal family.
“As an admirer of the Queen and her Reading Room I’m deeply disappointed in her giving a platform to JKR, any month but especially during Pride Month,” one commenter wrote on Tuesday. “There are many other admirable individuals to spotlight who champion reading for children and young people.”
Another person added, “Who signed off on this during Pride Month? Transgender rights are human rights.”
Several comments included the transgender pride flag emoji, showing support for the transgender community. While there were some positive comments on the image, the photo was mainly flooded with criticisms.
“Your Majesty, in posting this photo and message, you must also have another shared passion,” another Instagram user wrote. “It is deeply disappointing to see this kind of shared hatred on your channel. I believe, the late Queen Elizabeth II would never have stooped so low.”
Us Weekly has reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment.
Despite writing the beloved Harry Potter books, Rowling has become known for her controversial beliefs in recent years. In 2020, the author penned an essay outlining her views on gender and sex issues, which caused several celebrities to speak out against her.
Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011, spoke out in support of the trans community at the time.
Rowling has since declared that she will not forgive any of the films’ stars for speaking out against her. Watson, however, has since said that her “deepest wish” is to keep loving people even though they don’t share the same opinions.
“I can love her. I can know she loved me. I can be grateful to her,” Watson, 36, said during the “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” in September 2025. “I can know the things that she said are true, and there can be this whole other thing and my job feels like to just hold all of it. But the bigger thing is just what she’s done will never be taken away from me.”
