Prince Harry has not yet accepted King Charles‘ lodging offer ahead of a planned five-day visit to the U.K. and a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex explained the reason why.
Harry, Meghan Markle and their children were offered rooms at a royal residence for their stay, scheduled for July 7 to July 11. The couple, however, clarified through their spokesperson that the dispute centered on whether Harry’s family would receive adequate police protection throughout the visit, not on where they would sleep.
The planned visit could mark King Charles’ first opportunity to see Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in the U.K. since 2022. By: MEGA
The statement came as Harry, Meghan and their children — Prince Archie, 7 and Princess Lilibet, 5 — prepared to travel to Britain to mark the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. The trip would mark the first time Archie and Lilibet have visited the U.K. since June 2022, when the family attended Queen Elizabeth II‘s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The spokesperson for the estranged royals noted that Harry’s schedule in the U.K. included both public and private engagements across the country. Accordingly, Harry “continues to explore every available option” so the visit can proceed safely and his children can enjoy spending time in the U.K.

The father and son have had a strained relationship since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020. By: MEGA
Another source close to the prince spoke to The Guardian about Harry’s concerns. They explained, “The hope is they can meet their grandfather, but there is no way that can happen if they are chased by paparazzi wherever they go from the moment they step off the plane. He won’t put his children through that.”
Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace, Windsor Castle and Frogmore Cottage — the couple’s former U.K. residence before their move to California in 2020 — had all reportedly been considered as accommodation options. According to the Daily Mail, the couple had not responded to the offer at the time of publication.

Prince Harry and Meghan are expected to attend several Invictus Games-related engagements during their planned U.K. visit. By: MEGA
The security concerns stem from a decision by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as RAVEC, not to grant the family taxpayer-funded police protection except while they remain inside royal residences. That leaves Harry relying on his privately funded security team for the rest of the trip.
Harry’s spokesperson said an independent Risk Management Board that RAVEC itself had deemed necessary the previous November had still not convened, making it difficult to understand how the current security arrangements could be considered proportionate without that assessment.

Prince Harry has previously said he is reluctant to bring his family to Britain without adequate security protections. By: MEGA
The prince has spoken publicly in the past about his reluctance to bring his family to Britain without firm security guarantees. Following his 2025 court loss, he told the BBC that he could not see a world in which he would bring his wife and children back to the U.K. at that point.
A decision on both the accommodation question and the broader security arrangements is expected soon, though no timeline has been confirmed.
