ZANESVILLE − A musical based on the Stephen King novel and 1976 film “Carrie” will open Oct. 10 at the Renner Theatre. It’s The Renner’s first foray into the horror genre.
Hope Scott will take on the lead character, teenage outcast who’s bullied by her peers and sheltered by her fanatically religious mother played by Ashley Bondurant, Scott’s mother. At school, Carrie is mocked and tormented, especially by the class snob portrayed by Allie Norman.
Actors rehearse a scene from the musical “Carrie” based on the Stephen King novel and 1976 film to be presented at the Renner Theatre.
The cast also includes Cash Hesler, played by Alaina Roberts, Shelby Zimmerman, Christian Byers, Elise Clark, Ash Dalton, Madyson Grimm, Scott Koenig, Bailey Rice, Ashton Skoutelas, Hugh Snyder, Sara Waggle, Hayden Weck, Autumn Wheeler, Eric Turner, Andie Schmitt, Sean Starcher and Scott and Michelle Robison.
It’s directed by Jessica Cunningham with music direction by Nate Kearns. Choreography is by Trinity Millikan. Addy Weck is producer.
While “Carrie” is known for its supernatural horror and dramatic intensity, the production is also being used as a powerful platform to address bullying and the long-term emotional scars it can leave, assistant director Shelley Tolliver said in an announcement. The theater wants to do more than entertain — it wants to engage the community in meaningful dialogue, she said.
Each performance will include resources for those experiencing bullying or abuse, offering ways to find help or help others.
“It’s a tough world out there,” Tolliver stated in the announcement. “This show is intense, yes, but it also reflects the very real trauma caused by bullying and social isolation. We want to encourage people to start the conversation. Talk to your kids. Your friends. Your coworkers. Let’s support each other.”
The production is not recommended for children. It contains adult language, intense themes, violence, drug and alcohol use and special effects designed to mirror the psychological and supernatural elements of the story. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
Performances are 8 p.m. Oct 10, 11, 17 and 18 and 2:30 p.m. Oct. 12 and 19 at the Renner Theatre, 940 Findley Ave. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Tickets are available at the box office and online at therenner.org.
