Anthony Woodville, 2nd Earl Rivers, and Sir Richard Grey were central figures in the volatile power struggles that followed the death of King Edward IV in 1483. Anthony Woodville was the brother of Queen Elizabeth Woodville and uncle to the young King Edward V, while Richard Grey was the Queen’s younger son from her first marriage and thus Edward V’s half-brother.
As leading members of the powerful Woodville family faction, they held significant influence, particularly over the twelve-year-old King Edward V. Earl Rivers had served as the young king’s governor in Ludlow and was escorting Edward V toward London when they were intercepted by Richard, Duke of Gloucester (Edward IV’s brother and the future Richard III). At Stony Stratford on April 30, 1483, Gloucester arrested Rivers and Grey (along with Sir Thomas Vaughan), accusing them of plotting against him and isolating the new king.
Imprisoned and swiftly moved north, the two men were later executed without trial at Pontefract Castle on June 25, 1483, on the orders of Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Their execution was a decisive step in Gloucester’s consolidation of power, which culminated in him seizing the throne shortly thereafter as King Richard III. Their fate highlighted the ruthless politics of the time and the deep-seated rivalry between the powerful Woodville family and the king’s uncle, Richard. Anthony Woodville was a highly cultivated man, known as a bibliophile and writer, having notably published one of the earliest books printed in English.
