Rihanna took the scarf-as-skirt trend and raised the stakes.
For years, girls on beach vacations have been tying scarves around their waists as coverups, but late last week, the “Umbrella” singer took the beachy styling hack and gave it a luxe streetwear spin.
While out in Beverly Hills with A$AP Rocky, Rihanna tied around her waist a graphic silk scarf in stripes of red, blue, pink, orange, and brown, with sparkly gold dots scattered all over. The scarf acted as an asymmetrically midi skirt, which the pop superstar expertly styled with an oversize white T-shirt and layers of gold jewelry, including a choker, a large beaded necklace, and some pendant chains. She shaded her eyes with inky cat-eye sunglasses.
Mimicking the splash of color on her skirt was Rihanna’s rare Fendi baguette bag in orange and green blue sequined panels and a touch of red lizard skin. The piece resales for around $2,000.

And finally, capping off the fit was a pair of white thong sandals—but these weren’t just any thong sandals. The puffy, jelly-like shoes had cleats instead of kitten heels, and hailed from Rihanna’s Fenty collab with Puma. They retail for $90.
Cleat heels, in their many forms, may continue to cause quite the controversy within fashion circles. But on Rihanna, we have to admit they look surprisingly sleek.
Over the past month, Rihanna has stepped out in everything from striped pajamas elevated with layers of jewelry, to a shaggy fur stole paired with animal-print staples, to Alexander Wang cargo pants styled with a sharp blazer. You can never accuse her of being boring.
