Over the weekend, hordes of fans traveled to Yankee Stadium to witness three consecutive shows from Jay-Z, who is currently on tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt. Throughout his Bronx stint, he presented all kinds of surprise guests, but Sunday provided the starriest lineup yet, with the rapper bringing out figures like his wife, Beyoncé, as well as Rihanna, Usher, Pharrell Williams, Teyana Taylor, Swizz Beatz, Jeezy, Clipse, The Dream, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, and more.
Of all these major names, perhaps the biggest surprise was none other than Rihanna, whose last studio album came out a decade ago. Since becoming a mother, and turning her attention to other ventures like her Fenty Beauty empire, Rihanna has only taken part in live performances on rare and special occasions, like the Super Bowl.
For her longtime friend though, Rihanna made an exception, and she was seen heading into the baseball stadium on Sunday night in a fittingly sporty look.
As a nod to Jay-Z, Rihanna wore a black sleeveless jersey that said “Roc-A-Fella,” which was the name of the record label and music management company that he co-founded back in 1996.
The jersey was embroidered with a “1” on the front, and it featured white trim, which RiRi matched with a pair of flip-flops down low. To match the tones of her jersey, she also slopped into a pair of black track pants with white stripes down the sides. Finally, she accessorized with oversize sunglasses from Saint Laurent, along with a chunky silver choker and earrings to match.
For her performance, Rihanna switched into a caramel-colored, strapless leather top with black fur trim, which was styled with brown leather pants, stacks of belts, and slingback heels. She joined the headliner on a performance of “Run This Town,” while also doing a rendition of her solo single “Bitch Better Have My Money.”
Rihanna and Jay-Z go way back. When the “Diamonds” singer was just a teenager trying to secure a record deal, she was signed by the rapper at Def Jam Recordings, where he served as the president and CEO at the time. He helped curate her debut album, Music of the Sun, and he then later featured on her Good Girl Gone Bad single “Umbrella,” which reached no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
