Is Rihanna coming back with new music?
For the past eight years, Rihanna largely stepped back from releasing new music to focus on her business ventures, philanthropy, personal life and family.
But on Wednesday, Roc Nation posted a cryptic message accompanied by a trailer to X showcasing all of Rihanna’s studio albums: Music of the Sun (2005), A Girl Like Me (2006), Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), Rated R (2009), Loud (2010), Talk That Talk (2011), Unapologetic (2012) and Anti (2016).
Many fans also noticed that the “We Found Love” singer updated her profile pictures across social media and changed the banner on her X account to showcase all of her studio albums.
Roc Nation, established by Jay-Z in 2008 in partnership with Live Nation, is a full-service management, music publishing and entertainment service. Rihanna joined Roc Nation in 2010, where she signed a management deal and launched her own record label, Westbury Road Entertainment, which grants her greater creative control over her music.
“20 years with you,” Roc Nation wrote on X. “This Friday marks 20 years since @Rihanna released her debut album. #R20.”
Released on Aug. 29, 2005, by Def Jam Records, Music of the Sun is the debut studio album by the Barbadian singer-songwriter. The lead single of the album “Pon de Replay” peaked at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. Though Music of the Sun received generally mixed reviews from music critics, it successfully launched Rihanna’s music career, introducing her as a fresh new voice in pop and R&B in the early 2000s.
Over the next decade, Rihanna released multiple hit albums and singles that solidified her status as a global pop icon. From A Girl Like Me to Good Girl Gone Bad to Loud, which introduced listeners to songs like “SOS,” “Umbrella,” “Only Girl (In the World)” and “What’s My Name?,” she consistently dominated the charts.
Her later albums, such as Talk That Talk, Unapologetic and Anti, transitioned the singer from dance-pop to R&B, earning her critical acclaim from critics and fans, multiple Grammy awards and many fans eagerly waiting for a new release.
Back in February, Rihanna told Harper’sBazaarthat she was working on new music, describing her long-awaited ninth album as “unexpected” and “genre-less,” rather than the rumored reggae project. Other than two new songs for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Smurfs movie soundtracks in 2022 and 2025, respectively, and a collaboration with PARTYNEXTDOOR in 2020, the 37-year-old singer has not released a new studio album since 2017.
While on her music hiatus, she launched two beauty brands: Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty, plus continued her charity work through the Clara Lionel Foundation. Rihanna also explored acting, appearing in films like Ocean’s 8 in 2018 and Guava Island in 2019, and lending her voice in Smurfs this year. In 2023, she made a brief musical return with her Super Bowl LVII halftime performance. On top of all that, she is raising two young sons with her partner A$AP Rocky and has a third child on the way.
Fans are eagerly anticipating Rihanna’s next move, whatever she may have planned.
