Bic Runga has finally released new music.
The Aotearoa icon — and official Rolling Stone AU/NZ Icon — today released brand-new single “It’s Like Summertime”, a song that recalls her carefree past while looking towards a hopeful future.
“I wanted to offer comfort in a time where everyone needs it. The world feels so different now and familiarity provides care and love,” Runga shares.
“It’s Like Summertime” is a family affair, Runga writing and producing it alongside her partner Kody Nielson, who also plays drums, bass, and synth on the song.

Runga’s comeback single will feature on her new album, Red Sunset, due for release next year. That record will be her first original album since the release of Belle, which was a top 5 hit in New Zealand in 2011.

At the 2023 Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards, Runga was presented with the prestigious Rolling Stone Icon Award. The Icon Award recognises an artist for achievements over the course of their career, and 2023 was the first time it was awarded at the Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards. She also stole the show on the night with an incredible live performance.
The following year, Runga was part of a dreamy Kiwi pairing in our Musicians on Musicians series, sitting down with pop star BENEE for a touching conversation about music and life.
“How did you get so creative and brilliant?” Runga asked BENEE, to which the Auckland-born artist quickly responded, “That’s coming from a legend, a literal icon!”
They also discussed the trials and tribulations of live performances. “It’s about using everything in the moment — rolling with it. My dad was in the army, so he taught me to stay calm, even when it’s hard. I know what it feels like to be anxious, but you just have to push through that crazy feeling. It’s always there,” Runga shared.
