Ronnie Wood is remembering the words of wisdom that he imparted to Amy Winehouse.
The Rolling Stones guitarist, 79, encouraged the “Valerie” songstress to “get it together” prior to her death at age 27 in 2011.
“She would go: ‘Oh Ronnie, what am I going to do?’ I said: ‘’Look, everyone knows you’ve got vodka in the water bottle. Get it together and get on stage,’” Wood told the Daily Mail. “But if you could get her up there and she stayed there, it’d be great.”

He continued, “I’m sad because she didn’t do her full span. It was like saying goodbye to Billie Holiday again.”
Winehouse, who struggled with drug and alcohol addiction throughout her life, died of accidental alcohol poisoning in her London home on July 23, 2011. A six-time Grammy-winner, Winehouse released two albums throughout her career: 2003’s Frank and 2006’s Back to Black. Her life was also depicted in the 2024 biopic, Back to Black.
Now, the Rolling Stones are paying tribute to Winehouse on their upcoming album, Foreign Tongues, which includes their take on Winehouse’s hit, “You Know I’m No Good.”
The cover comes almost two decades after the band performed with Winehouse at the Isle of Wight Festival in 2007.
Wood isn’t the only Rolling Stones member looking back at their time with Winehouse. Speaking with The Sunday Times Culture Magazine, guitarist Keith Richards revealed that he wished he’d gotten the chance to really know the singer-songwriter before her death.
“I was always sort of ‘well, I’m bound to meet her down the road,’” he told the outlet. “You expect things to happen, and unfortunately no. But that’s what records are for. I’m just very glad and honored to have played with her at least once.’”

Foreign Tongues, the band’s 25th studio album, also sees the Rolling Stones collaborate with several other music legends including Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Robert Smith, and Chad Smith. It is set to hit record stores on July 10.
