Ronda Rousey had a solid run with the WWE after she left the UFC following a couple of brutal beatdowns, but she still seems to be struggling with the idea that professional wrestling is a business.
And that is not going well for her on social media with even a pair of pro wrestling stars ripping her for her comments.
So, what did Rousey say?
Well, during an appearance on “The Lapsed Fan” podcast she lamented the fact that the company had her get in the ring with another popular wrestler, Alex Bliss. Bliss is not as big as Rousey and she does not have the combat sports background. Rousey apparently took note of that and didn’t appreciate it.
“The fact that they had me fighting Alexa Bliss at all was (expletive) ridiculous, and you wanna know why they had me against Alexa Bliss?” Rouse said. “Because she had the most merch sales at the time. Like, what the (expletive)? That’s your decision-making process?”
Again, that is, in fact, typically a large part of the decision-making process for professional wrestling promoters and bookers.
WWE star CM Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, took issue with Rousey’s statements. Brooks fought in the UFC like Rousey, albeit he was not nearly as successful. But he’s a big-time star in the world of professional wrestling.
He reshared Rousey’s quote on X and wrote, “Hiring Ronda Rousey was the worst decision ever done.”
Another wrestling star, MJF, who is under contract with AEW, also could not help but call out Rousey. He reshared her quote on X and wrote, “It’s almost like pro wrestling much like any professional sport functions as a business. (Expletive) crazy.”
It didn’t get much better for Rousey with the fans.
“Has Ronda figured out why she main evented WrestleMania,” one person responded giving a nod toward the fact that Rousey was elevated to the role because of her popularity.
“Thank God she is no longer in this business,” another wrote. “By the way Alexa is better than her in every way.”
“Ronda Rousey though Sandy Hook was a hoax,” another person wrote referencing a conspiracy theory video that Rousey shared after that tragedy. “So it’s no surprise that she’s too stupid to understand how pro wrestling works.”
