Palace insiders fear that any attempt by King Charles to reunite with Prince Harry could backfire because the Sussexes might publicise private conversations, a royal expert has claimed. Former royal editor Duncan Larcombe said the King is in an “impossible position” as both he and Prince William are wary of reaching out while trust remains at an all-time low. The concern centres on the danger that Harry and Meghan Markle would disclose personal details or drop further bombshells about the Royal Family if contact were resumed.
Mr Larcombe told the Mirror even a simple phone call from Charles suggesting a meeting during last week’s US visit could be made public by Harry, highlighting the breakdown in trust.
He said: “He and Prince William can’t reach out to Harry for fear of him then publicising it. That’s the big blockage. If they were to resume contact, they run the risk that Harry and Meghan could disclose more personal details and drop more bombshells about what’s happening. This is where the fear lies for the Royal Family.
“If Charles rang Harry and said, ‘I’m coming to the US, I’d love to see you,’ the danger is Harry would go public with it. That breakdown in trust is the most significant thing.”
Relations between the family remain deadlocked following the couple’s 2021 Oprah interview and the publication of Harry’s memoir Spare in 2023. Royal expert Richard Palmer agreed that there is ongoing worry within the family that Harry or Meghan could say something embarrassing, leaving both sides saddened by the unresolved rift.
