One of the most notorious slasher films of the ’80s, Silent Night, Deadly Night, is getting another remake. It will land in theaters just in time for this year’s holiday season. Via Bloody Disgusting, we now have a brand new trailer for this tale of a serial killer so obsessed with Santa Claus, he dresses up like old Saint Nick to unleash his reign of terror. Before Art the Clown put on the Santa hat to kill in the Terrifier films, Billy Chapman did. The upcoming film stars Rohan Campbell, who played a slasher a few years back in Halloween Ends, as our new Billy, the jolly killer. When the original version of Silent Night, Deadly Night came out in 1984, it caused quite a controversy. It arrived at the height of the ’80s slasher cycle, and seemed like a slasher version of Santa Claus would join Michael and Jason in the great horror pantheon. But parents’ groups freaked out when the movie was advertised to kids during family-friendly TV shows, leading to a barrage of protests. Shying away from bad publicity, the distributor pulled the movie from theaters only a week later. Christmas 1984 was now safe for the kiddies.

Funnily enough, Silent Night, Deadly Night outgrossed another horror movie that came out that week in 1984. You may have heard of it: A Nightmare on Elm Street. Getting an evil Santa out of theaters was probably only good for Freddy’s bottom line. This is actually the second remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night. The first came out in 2012, only thirteen years ago. This has to be a record for the least amount of time between a horror reboot, right? In any event, the new Silent Night, Deadly Night will arrive in theaters on December 12.
