While Sheinelle has stayed silent amid Uche’s death and the months leading up to it (she took a leave of absence from Today that began in December 2024), she is now opening up about the aftermath of it all. Speaking with friend and co-host Savannah Guthrie for her September 5 return on Today, Sheinelle gave a quiet update about how her kids are holding up after losing their dad. While she expressed her pride in how they’re handling everything, the situation is not what she envisioned for her family.
“I’ve always wanted kids, and I have three kids of my own now, and they’ve lost their dad. And I’m their mom. It sucks,” she stated in a clip posted on YouTube. “I’m proud of my kids for how we’ve been able to try to pull through, but it’s horrible. It’s just horrible. But I’m here, I’m breathing and I’m OK.”
But that’s not all Sheinelle stated about raising Kayin, Uche, and Clara as a single mom. While she acknowledged how she’d love to not leave her home and grieve in her own way, being a mother has become a reason to stay present.
“That’s what makes this harder,” she added to Savannah. “There are times where if I could just stay in bed, keep the door closed, not answer my phone and just sit, it would be amazing. But I can’t do that, because I have three little beings who are watching me.”
When fans saw Sheinelle’s honest update about her family, they all went to social media to show their support.
