A Shreveport native, content creator Chanell Sykes caught the attention of a celebrity after attempting to recreate her hairstyle in a viral video.
On Jan. 7, Dallas-based content creator Sykes, who has been creating content since 2020, posted a viral video after attempting to recreate a hairstyle by Teyana Taylor, an actress, singer, model, and more, while her husband reacted humorously.
The video gained Taylor’s attention, leading her to help Sykes recreate the hairstyle herself.
On Feb. 10, Sykes posted a collaboration video featuring Taylor and her glam squad, who helped her recreate the look she was going for and even taught her how to do it herself.
Sykes was born and raised in Shreveport and moved to Dallas with her husband in 2019, but she still has family ties to the city and Louisiana. Her husband, Dother Sykes, — also a Shreveport native — even worked on the movie “Sinners” as a stunt actor, and his category is nominated for a SAG award and an Oscar.
According to Sykes, her content originally focused on the fitness industry, but she switched to more authentic, relatable lifestyle content in 2022, which led to videos like the one she posted about Taylor’s hairstyle.
“I’ve done a lot of styles previously with some inspired by other celebrities, and they’ve gone well, but I didn’t expect my hair to come out that badly,” Sykes wrote in an email. “I decided to post it anyway because that is what my community knows me for. I post the good and the not-so-good, but I didn’t expect it to take off that much!”
Sykes said it was amazing to meet Taylor, who was sweet and down to Earth, and that her team was just as amazing as she was. She even gifted fragrances, “Dream In Silk” and “Enje’” from her own beauty line, Dainty Girl Beauty, to Taylor, who said they smelled amazing.
“Everyone was so hands-on and encouraging in teaching me how to move forward with my hair and care for it after I left, showing me what to do,” Sykes wrote.
Sykes said she’s always shouting out that she’s from Shreveport because that’s always going be home for her, and she’s proud of where she’s from.
“It’s important to me that people know the talent that lives in Shreveport,” Sykes wrote.
Sykes shouted Shreveport out in a Facebook post with Taylor.
