As Jimmy Kimmel is set to return to the airwaves, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group announced “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will not air on ABC-affiliated stations, which include a handful in Texas.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is set to return to late-night on Tuesday, Sept. 23, after the show was suspended ‘indefinitely’ by Disney on Sept. 17 over comments Kimmel made about conservative host and activist Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer. Prior to Disney’s decision, both Sinclair and Nexstar announced that Kimmel would be taken off the air at ABC affiliate stations.
Disney then announced on Monday, Sept. 22 — less than a week after the suspension — that the comedian would be returning to late-night television, but Sinclair and Nexstar issued statements that they would continue to preempt the show.
“We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve,” Nexstar said in a news release posted on its website on Tuesday. “In the meantime, we note that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will be available nationwide on multiple Disney-owned streaming products, while our stations will focus on continuing to produce local news and other programming relevant to their respective markets.”
Nexstar has more than 200 owned or partner stations in 116 U.S. markets reaching 220 million people, according to its website. Meanwhile, Sinclair owns, operates and/or provides services to 185 television stations in 85 markets.
