Snoop Dogg faced backlash after making comments about the LGBTQ representation in Pixar’s 2022 film Lightyear.
A fake apology linked to the rapper spread online, but checks of his official accounts showed no such post. According to Deadline, sources close to Snoop confirmed that the apology was fabricated and not issued by him or his team.
The fake comment appeared under a Hollywood Unlocked post featuring T.S. Madison criticizing Snoop’s remarks. It read, “I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons. All my gay friends [know] what’s up, they been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-yr-old. Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect.”
While it appeared on his verified Instagram account, his representatives later confirmed that the post was not authentic.
Snoop had previously spoken about the film on the It’s Giving podcast, where he explained his discomfort with the depiction of same-sex parents in the movie. He said, “I didn’t come in for this shit. Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for… It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.” He recalled his grandson asking how a woman could have a baby with another woman, leading him to admit he struggled with providing an explanation.
Lightyear tells the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Chris Evans, and features a same-sex couple, Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) and her wife Kiko. Screenwriter Lauren Gunderson later explained on Instagram that she helped create the characters, writing, “I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of shit for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists.”
