Best of Broadway: What shows we’re rooting for on Tony Awards night

Here’s a quick rundown of nominees for the night’s most important awards, broken up by category. Click here to see a full list of nominees.

Drama: Apple’s mindbending mystery box Severance has the most nominations of any show, including nods for Outstanding Drama Series, writing, directing and nominees in every acting category except for Guest Actor. Its toughest competition may come from HBO’s The Pitt, which earned seven total nominations for its first season. HBO’s more seasoned awards darling, The White Lotus, earned 10 major nominations as well — including seven between the supporting actress and actor categories. Other nominees for Outstanding Drama are Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise and Slow Horses.

Comedy: The last two winners of Outstanding Comedy Series, The Bear and Hacks, are up for the award again this year. Both shows are also well represented in acting categories, with The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White pursuing his third consecutive lead actor win. They’ll face tough competition from Apple’s star-studded Hollywood comedy The Studio, which received 23 total nominations — the most for a comedy in its first year ever. The other nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series are Abbott Elementary, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking and What We Do in the Shadows.

Limited Series: HBO’s The Penguin is the second most-nominated show this year, with nods for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and three of its stars — Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti and Deirdre O’Connell — earning acting nominations. Its toughest competition appears to be Netflix’s Adolescence, which has a pair of cast members in each of the supporting acting categories on top of its nomination for the top award. Black Mirror, Dying for Sex and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story are also up for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
