Sydney Sweeney has become one of the most talked-about figures in the world post her American Eagle Jeans ad controversy. However, she continues to dominate the industry with her acting talent. Deviating from her usual characters, the actress will soon be seen in Christy, a biopic about the boxer Christy Martin.

Ahead of the film’s release, Sweeney sat down for a detailed interview, where she touched on many aspects, including her affinity for unlikable characters.

Sydney Sweeney reveals why she likes to play ‘unlikable’ characters

Sydney Sweeney recently sat down with Variety for a long feature, touching on several aspects of the actress’s career and life. Others, like Mike White, also expressed their opinions about the actress. After White spoke about how Sweeney was naturally likable, Sweeney revealed that she herself gravitated towards “unlikable” characters when picking out her roles.

She also stated that she had a particular reason to play these flawed archetypes. By her own admission, Sweeney wants the audience to develop empathy for flawed characters and people.

She told Variety, “I tend to gravitate towards characters that are stereotypically unlikable, and I like to challenge an audience to have empathy for that person.” She further added about her The White Lotus character, “Olivia was that — a very hard-hitting, Gen Z, in-your-face kind of girl.”

The Euphoria star has also often been very likable and ended up gaining significant attention for it. Her character in Anyone But You, which went on to become a huge success, was one such role, where Sweeney embraced her likable self, and it made all the difference.

In her upcoming role as Christy Martin, Sydney Sweeney may once again need to push the bounds of her acting limits, embodying a character that is very different from her usual crop of roles. She also delved into this in a new interview, explaining how this story meant a lot to her.

Christy will release theatrically on November 7, 2025.
