Farrah Abraham is often applauded for allowing her daughter, Sophia, to express herself through her clothing and makeup – but the former reality star acknowledges that the teenager may still have experienced trauma.
The 16 & Pregnant alum, 34, explained that checking into a trauma center in 2022 was “literally the saving grace,” in an interview with E! News published Wednesday, September 24. Abraham called the experience “the biggest gift I could ever give myself.”
“And that’s why I’m giving that to my daughter when she turns 18,” she added.
Abraham – who welcomed daughter Sophia, 16, in February 2009 – opened up about some of her issues, including her relationship with mom Debra Danielsen.

“I had a really bad mother wound. I had a really bad complex with my mom not being the mom that I needed,” she explained. “Then by the end of that, you see, ‘Hey, what are these patterns that I’ve allowed in my life with people?’ And number one was giving my love for protection, and I never got protection from anyone in my life.”
In the years since trauma therapy, the Teen Mom OG alum has distanced herself from her parents, revealing, “They did not serve something that I definitely need, which is a safe space.”
“If anything taught me to be a better mom, it was from all the people who never really were there when I was deeply sad,” she added, referring to the death of Sophia’s father, Derek Underwood, who passed away in a car accident before her birth.
