Don’t think, just answer: Would you rather win an Oscar or land on the ceremony’s best-dressed list? For many stars on the red carpet tonight, the answer is the latter—or at least, it’s a toss-up.
Besides the inevitable cool factor, being crowned Best Dressed comes with a major pop culture honor: living rent-free in everyone’s heads—and closets—for at least the next decade. Think about it: What clothing junkie hasn’t dreamed of looking like Cate Blanchett in her embroidered 1999 gown by John Galliano, featuring a hummingbird zigzagging up her nearly bare back? Or tried to toss their hemline back like Lupita Nyong’o did in her ice blue Prada dress at the 2014 ceremony?
This year’s mood board is already filling up, thanks to Jessie Buckley’s dazzling appearance in a custom creation from Chanel designer Matthieu Blazy, which features a lipstick-red top paired with a soft pink skirt. Teyana Taylor went for double Cs, too, in a sheer black gown with black-and-white feathers that frothed along the hemline. Meanwhile, Sinners’ Wunmi Mosaku and Sentimental Value’s Renata Reinsve wore color-drenched creations by Louis Vuitton, and Marty Supreme’s costume designer Miyako Bellizzi went vintage in a Christian Dior creation from 1999 by John Galliano. (Actress Ariana Greenblatt did the same, while Rose Byrne and Mia Goth stuck with current Dior gowns by creative director Jonathan Anderson.)
