Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part 2 just got a major creative boost, and it comes straight from the Star Wars universe. The upcoming DC sequel has enlisted an Emmy-winning Andor production designer.
Emmy-winning Andor production designer joins The Batman 2
Luke Hull, known for his work on Andor and HBO’s Chernobyl, will bring his visionary design approach to The Batman 2. Hull’s involvement signals that Gotham City is about to get even darker, grittier, and more immersive than before (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Hull is renowned for his philosophy of constructing extensive, practical sets to set the scale and gravity of a story. For Chernobyl, he oversaw the creation of an entire nuclear power plant to viscerally convey the disaster’s scope. He brought a similar grounded approach to Andor, building immersive worlds like Senator Mon Mothma’s home planet, Chandrila, which he described as a blend of “feudal Japan meets Scandi meets Scottish Castle.”
Hull previously emphasized to Deadline that impact isn’t just about size, but about “explaining the scale of the disaster… the scale of the effect on the people.” This mindset aligns perfectly with the doomed, atmospheric weight of Reeves’ Gotham.
This hiring feels particularly inspired. After all, in The Batman universe, Gotham City is not just a backdrop; it is a central character. Bruce Wayne’s crusade is intrinsically tied to the city’s corrupt and decaying soul. Where other heroes may jet off around the globe, Batman’s story is Gotham’s story.
By bringing in a designer of Hull’s caliber, who specializes in creating environments that reflect narrative themes and character psyches, Reeves is possibly ensuring that the city will continue to be a powerful, oppressive force in the sequel.
Robert Pattinson will be back with co-stars Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis. The sequel will pick up shortly after the events of The Penguin series. The Batman: Part 2 is releasing on October 1, 2027.
