Fans of The Bear are in for a treat: A surprise episode has just dropped.
Titled “Gary,” the episode serves as a prequel to the show in which Richie Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Mikey Berzatto (Jon Bernthal) go on a work-related road trip to Gary, Ind. The episode, according to its official synopsis, follows “the two friends’ complicated relationship, uncovering new layers of Mikey’s mental state while offering crucial insight into the man Richie is when audiences first meet him in Season 1 — adding emotional context that reframes their story from the very beginning.”
Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal announced the episode’s debut in a joint Instagram post on Tuesday.
“COUSINS! PRIMOS! CUGINI!!! Get ready for GARY!!!! We are so excited to finally share this little adventure with Richie and Mikey,” said their caption. “Written by me and @jonnybernthal. Directed by the one Christopher Storer. Making this was a dream come true. Thanks to the beautiful people of Gary, Indiana and as always Chicago, Illinois. Search “Gary” in HULU to watch. @thebearfx @fxnetworks”
The duo also cowrote the episode, which was directed by The Bear series creator Christopher Storer. Fans of the series should note that when looking for the episode on Hulu, it’ll appear as its own standalone title, Gary, rather than appearing in The Bear’s catalog.
In a separate Instagram post, Bernthal posted a behind-the-scenes photo with Moss-Bachrach, alongside a caption hyping up the surprise episode: “Couldn’t be more proud. On Hulu now. GARY. TRUST ME. big love y’all.”

“Gary” comes ahead of The Bear Season 5, which is scheduled to debut sometime in June, though an exact date has yet to be set. While the fifth season is widely expected to be the final one of the Emmy Award-winning series, neither FX nor Storer has confirmed whether that is the case.
Richie and Mikey’s friendship has remained a touchstone throughout all four seasons of The Bear. The duo were lifelong best friends who grew up together in Chicago. While Richie wasn’t a Berzatto by blood, he was considered part of the family, often referred to as “cousin” because of the closeness of his bond with Mikey. Mikey’s tragic death occurs four months before Season 1 begins and serves as a devastating loss that the characters must grapple with as the show continues.
