Spooky season is almost over and horror fans have been binging on their favorite genre all month. All the major subscription streaming services, from Netflix to Paramount to Hulu, have entire sections of their libraries devoted to horror, supernatural, and found footage. However, some of the best horror movies are free on Tubi, which doesn’t require a subscription.
Tubi has a surprisingly good library in all genres. It has obtained licenses that ensure that when one crowd favorite is dropped from its lineup, a new one replaces it. It also seems to have a continuous license on some movies, such as 80s classics Labyrinth and Krull.
The site’s horror collection, however, is only rivalled by services dedicated entirely to horror. Tubi carries a collection of thrills, chills, and scares that offers something for every age and every subgenre. Packed with both classic horror and guilty pleasures, Tubi is like commercial television, but without the editing: yes, the movies are interrupted by ads, but they are not cut for content or length.
Want some new movies? Tubi has had the first three movies of the Hell House LLC franchise and the first few of the found footage V/H/S franchise for over a year. Terrifier fans can not only catch the first two movies, but also All Hallows’ Eve, which includes Art the Clown’s origin story. Independent spooky spoof Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey also awaits viewers, free of charge.
Tubi also features a lot of classics. An entire section is dedicated to Italian “giallo” films. Stephen King fans can get their fix with Maximum Overdrive or Children of the Corn, among others. The original versions of some of horror’s gems also live on Tubi: George Romero’s original Night of the Living Dead, Tobe Hooper’s infamous Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Dario Argento’s masterpiece Suspira are all in the library.
Tubi also has a lot of horror shows in its repertoire. New generations can discover the Goosebumps series or laugh along with The Munsters. Tubi also carries campy horror Dark Shadows and teenage serial Freddy’s Nightmares.
The subscription streaming services all carry their flagship stalwarts, and specialty services like Shudder cater exclusively to fans of horror and thrillers. What makes Tubi’s collection so great is that it can easily compete with paid services without costing a cent. The only difference between watching a horror movie on Tubi and on its native streaming service is that Tubi includes commercials, which is a small price to pay for free access to great movies. The best part is, they carry the same caliber of movies all year, not just during Halloween.
