I had the pleasure of chatting with the creators of Drunk Tales: The Horror Movie at LA Comic Con this year, where I got a full breakdown on how the game works, the replayability, and a sneak peek at some of the in-game scenarios.
Marc and Adam, creators of the game, describe it as a “horror movie-inspired drinking board game that combines references from all of your favorite horror movies into an adult version of Candy Land.”
Play starts by picking one of the twelve playable characters, ranging from “The Jock” and “Final Girl” to “Goofy Greg.” Each character has a special power, making replayability high. For instance, any time you make another player laugh while playing as Goofy Greg, they have to take a drink. Lightweights can focus on characters like “Besty Bess,” which allows other players to move faster in exchange for her user never having to take a shot.
The board is split into four different horror movie settings: the summer camp, the graveyard, the cabin in the woods, and the haunted house. Each board space invites the whole group to drink with unique challenges. Each setting ties into a unique area card deck that offers thematic challenges based on the tropes associated with its genre.
As you and your friends compete to survive each playable area, you’ll go head-to-head with bosses relevant to the current space. For example, the Summertime Slasher won’t let you pass his domain until youroll a three. If you roll anything other than a three, you take a drink and immediately try again. It’s like Ride the Bus, but way more aggressive… The first player to reach the final space on the board and defeat the final boss wins!
I’m super excited for my copy to arrive sometime next week so my buddies and I can sit down and get absolutely plastered while giggling over the absurdity of this game. You can get your copy for $44.99 at https://www.drunk-tales.com/shop/shopall.
