Oh, The Last Jedi. All these years later, you continue to rain down gifts upon those of us who enjoy the chaos you spread. I don’t think it’s unfair to call The Last Jedi a catalyst for one of the biggest manbaby tantrums in pop culture history. So, in an effort to incite more of those toddler-brained dolts, I’m more than happy to praise the film’s legacy today as it led to Mark Hamill nabbing a role that is likely to go down as one of his greatest.
In case you need a refresher, Mark Hamill is the actor who played Luke Skywalker in a few Star Wars movies. His missing presence was at the core of The Force Awakens and was the cliffhanger ending for that film. When we finally got to spend time with him in The Last Jedi, Luke was bitter, abrasive, and portrayed in a way that caused grown men to wet their underoos and throw away their big boy toys in protest like any well-adjusted adult. Frankly, Mark Hamill’s performance and character in The Last Jedi are easily enormous highlights of that movie. And director Francis Lawrence knew that was the case when he cast Hamill as The Major in The Long Walk.
Mark Hamill In The Last Jedi Led To The Long Walk
Francis Lawrence recently revealed that he cast Mark Hamill in The Long Walk because of his performance in the recent Star Wars movies, specifically his darker but commanding performance in The Last Jedi. In The Long Walk, Mark Hamill plays the part of The Major, the militaristic despot character that runs the deadly game. In the Stephen King book, The Major is seen as a patriotic hero and even revered by some of the boys at the start of the competition. As the story progresses, he becomes a figurehead for everything evil and wrong about this nihilistic future.
I have been waiting most of my life for a movie adaptation of The Long Walk. The Major is a prime candidate for an all-timer movie villain. If early reports are to be believed, Francis Lawrence has delivered an all-timer of a flick. Part of that has to do with Mark Hamill as The Major and the decision to cast him thanks to the work he did in The Last Jedi. So, even if you vehemently despise that flick, its existence led to one of my favorite actors being cast in one of my favorite potential adaptations. I’m always going to love it for that.
Mark Hamill is racking up some great performances in the later part of his career. He’s been deeply respected as a voice actor for decades, but with recent turns in The Fall of the House of Usher, The Life of Chuck, and now The Long Walk, he’s starting to get the attention and accolades he deserves as a dramatic actor on screen. I’m willing to bet that a lot of folks are going to remember him after seeing The Major in The Long Walk. They may not look at Luke Skywalker the same way again.
