Never in my wildest dreams would I think a title as generic as Clown in a Cornfield could put such a unique twist on a premise that’s been done to death. What’s more, I never would have expected an adaptation of a young adult novel to be so grisly, over-the-top, and fun. This isn’t a film that reinvents horror by any stretch of the imagination, but if you’re looking for a solid seasonal scare, this is it.
Released this summer, Clown in a Cornfield earns points for its likeable characters, chaotic charm, and Frendo the Clown, my new favorite modern-day slasher antagonist.
Founder’s Day Prank Takes A Disastrous Turn
Clown in a Cornfield hits the familiar beats of a young adult coming-of-age story. We meet Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas), who relocates to Kettle Springs with her father, Glenn (Aaron Abrams), after her mother’s death. Glenn, the town’s new doctor, buries himself in work while Quinn finds trouble with local kids who spend their time producing viral prank videos featuring Frendo the Clown.

Frendo is the mascot of the now burned-down Baypen corn syrup factory, once a community stable. As the 100th annual Founder’s Day festival approaches, Quinn and her friends orchestrate an elaborate prank that backfires, landing them in temporary lockup. Meanwhile, a killer dressed as Frendo begins his bloody rampage.
Incompetent Adults, Or Secretly In On The Action?
When Clown in a Cornfield fully embraces its namesake, it leans into the YA aesthetic by portraying every adult in Kettle Springs as either incompetent or apathetic. Leading the charge is Will Sasso’s Sheriff Dunne, who by all rights should be the last person allowed to carry a firearm. But something is darker at play: multiple Frendos appear, and most adults seem oddly indifferent.

They’re either too clueless to notice their kids are being slaughtered, or too complicit to care.
A Worthy R-Rated Young Adult Adaptation
What impressed me most about Clown in a Cornfield was its willingness to go for an R-Rating, a rarity in YA adaptations. Kids get pitchforked, chainsaws roar, and shotguns blast, resulting in enough carnage to keep even the most jaded of horror fans entertained. The film has so much fun with its premise that genre lovers are bound to enjoy watching Frendo tear through a small Missouri town, one giggle at a time.
