Not to cast a dark cloud over Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s marriage, but maybe having Adam Sandler officiate wasn’t the best idea. Celebrity-officiated weddings have a spotty record: Kim Kardashian officiated for Chris Appleton and Lukas Gage (divorced), Jimmy Kimmel married Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux (divorced) and Little Richard presided over nuptials for Bruce Willis and Demi Moore (divorced). But everyone knows celebrities marrying athletes always works out. Just ask…actually, don’t.
Movies: A Bird? A Plane? A Flop
Supergirl’s box office debut was anything but super. The film from DC Comics and distributed by Warner Bros. reportedly cost over $200 million to make and promote but took in just under $40 million in its opening weekend. It would be easy to write this off as another female-led superhero failure, but the harsh reality is there haven’t been enough female superheroes to compare. Let’s hope this doesn’t stop filmmakers from expanding who gets to wear a cape.
Television: Two Decades of Drama
With a new season of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Orange County upon us, we’ve hit a reality TV milestone—20 years of Housewives. Which raises the question: Is the reality show what it used to be? Bravo has launched new cities with success (Rhode Island and Potomac come to mind), but so much of the franchise runs on nostalgia for the OG, Orange County, where Vicki Gunvalson helped start it all in 2006. How much longer before it becomes Real Housewives of the Retirement Community?
Books: One Last Score
Crooked cops, smooth gangsters, everyday lowlifes and people just trying to get by: these are the characters who inhabit an evolving neighborhood in Colson Whitehead’s Harlem Trilogy. Spanning three decades, the series follows Ray Carney, a furniture salesman and family man with a wavering moral compass. The latest installment, Cool Machine (July 21), finds Carney teaming up with his old partner for one last job to save the son of his slain cousin against the backdrop of a gritty 1980s New York City. It’s on our reading list.
