The royal family in the post-Queen Elizabeth II era is struggling, and it’s going to take a major pivot for the palace to win fans back.
Gen Z is already calling out Prince William’s “unearned privilege” in the press, and a reporter at the BAFTAs red carpet asked the Prince and Princess of Wales, “Is the monarchy in peril?” — the royal family is going through it in the wake of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest. Now, royal historian Tessa Dunlop is calling on King Charles and William to do the unthinkable: reconcile with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

In a column for The I Paper, Dunlop pointed out that “Andrew had been hiding in plain sight,” while Harry and Meghan “have been chafing in exile ever since they were unequivocally told that their own half-in-half-out royal model was not an option.” Their punishment didn’t fit the crime — and let’s be real, the Sussexes haven’t done anything wrong legally.

The Independent noted that Gen Z finds William to be “cold” and “unkind” for the way he’s treated his younger brother and that Harry “paid a heavier price for his actions than Andrew did.” That belief doesn’t help the future King of England, who intends to modernize the monarchy when he inherits the throne. Without Gen Z and Gen A’s public support, the royal family won’t survive.
That’s why Dunlop believes William and Charles need to extend the olive branch to Harry and Meghan now because “the Andrew story will get worse before it gets better.” Despite the U.K. tabloid headlines, there is plenty of evidence that the Sussexes remain popular on a global level, and “a conciliatory gesture” toward them “might just shore up support among the younger generations who have been so repelled by recent events.”
Will William be able to put aside his personal issues with his younger brother for the greater good of the monarchy? It would be a bombshell move, but it might be a necessary one in such dire times at the palace.
