Harry and Meghan are coming back to the UK. But don’t for one second think this is a casual homecoming. According to Daily Mail Editor at Large Alison Boshoff who has exclusive access to friends still in close contact with Harry, this trip has been years in the making, and it comes with an extraordinary set of secret rules.
Let’s start with the big picture. Is this trip an admission of failure?
“Well, in many ways, yeah, of course it is,” Alison told me. “If things were going great for them in Montecito and they could make all this money, then maybe they would care a bit less.”
But here’s what makes the situation genuinely complicated: this wasn’t just a reaction to failure. Alison says that Harry had actually been pushing for this since January 2025, before With Love, Meghan flopped, and before As Ever launched.
“I don’t think that the only motivating factor is the failure of their ambitions in California, which have failed,” she said. “I know that this was the direction of travel already.”
So what convinced King Charles to open the door? Alison says the answer is hiding in plain sight. Remember when Harry went to Ukraine and gave that speech, and everyone rolled their eyes? And then, a week later, Charles was in Washington giving a speech pointedly supporting Ukraine too? And then when Harry wrote an essay on antisemitism in the New Statesman — and a day later Charles was speaking out on the same subject?
“What I now think we were seeing there was the beginning of this cohesion between Harry’s camp and the King’s camp,” Alison said. “I think they were starting already then to work together, and that allowed the King to feel trust in Harry — that his son was changed, was mature, and was going to stick to his side of it. He could trust him to come to the UK and not use it as an opportunity to sell jam and flower sprinkles.”
Here’s where it gets really interesting, because the terms Harry reportedly agreed to are remarkable.
