Beyoncé detailed the lengths it took to turn the hairstyle on her husband, Jay-Z, from locs to a combed-out afro.
On Father’s Day (Sunday, June 21), Beyoncé’s hair care brand Cécred dropped a 7-minute documentary titled The Blueprint. Narrated by the 35-time Grammy winner, the short explored Jay-Z’s journey from nearly a decade of wearing wicks to transforming it into a natural fro. The title of the doc also nods to Jay-Z’s landmark album of the same name, which turns 25 on September 11.
“Jay told me a few months ago he was planning on combing out his locks for the Philly show with The Roots,” Beyoncé narrates, referring to her husband’s return to the stage for the first time since 2018. “He wanted to do this in honor of his father. His name was Adnis Reeves, and his favorite sports team was from Philly. His dad used to rock a fro, so he wanted to rock a fro in his honor.”
The Cowboy Carter artist added that she wasn’t “all the way convinced” that the hairstyle could be achieved considering that the rapper had “thick, long wicks.” “I thought it was always beautiful that the real reason Jay grew out his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like his hair,” she added about their 14-year-old daughter.
Beyoncé went on to explain that when Blue was 5 years old, she didn’t feel “confident” about her natural hair, which changed when Hov locked his hair, along with Beyoncé crafting songs like “Brown Skin Girl” and “Formation.”
The process of combing out the locs took six days, with Houston hairstylist Letisia “Lety” Ravelo guiding the process, notes GQ. Beyoncé and other family members joined in, with Beyoncé being shown combing out sections alongside hairstyling, all while using Cécred products throughout.
“I think the key ingredients are patience and love,” Beyoncé says in the doc after mentioning products like the Moisture Sealing Lotion and Detangling Spray.
“It wasn’t just one person who removed his locs. It was a family affair,” she continued.
Beyoncé concluded by sharing her admiration for her husband’s patience and sharing that she blow-dried and trimmed his ends before it was washed and braided before takedown.
“I want to thank Jay for trusting Cécred on his hair journey. He is forever The Blueprint,” she said.
Next month, the 25-time Grammy winner Jay-Z is set to perform a three-night residency at Yankee Stadium in celebration of the 30th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint, along with “Extra Innings.” Before the concerts, where Hov may possibly debut another natural look, fans can visit his two-day immersive pop-up activations at locations in DUMBO Brooklyn and Manhattan beginning Thursday (June 25).
