Things to do in Metro Detroit Mother's Day weekend

It’s Mother’s Day weekend in Motown.

Whether you have a material figure to celebrate or not, there’s a lot going on to know about.

Metro Detroit is jam-packed with seasonal fun like farmers markets, flower festivals and spring art shows. There are also a ton of happenings downtown, including Bruno Mars, Fantasia, and “Hamilton” returns to the Fisher Theatre.

Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening around Metro Detroit this weekend, May 8-10.

‘Hamilton’ at Fisher Theatre

The dramatic take on founding father Alexander Hamilton, set to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning music, returns for a run at the Fisher Theatre. Very few seats remain for this weekend’s shows. Tues.-Sun. Through May 17. $49-$199. 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit. Broadwayindetroit.com. 

‘King James’ at Detroit Public Theatre

A Pulitzer Prize-winning play about basketball superfans is the final production of the Detroit Public Theatre’s 11th season. The comedy is about an unexpected friendship forged through a shared love of the Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s written by Rajiv Josphy and directed by Courtney Burkett. 7:30 p.m. Through Friday are the previews, and the show opens 7:30 p.m. Sat. Mother’s Day Weekend at City Bird and Nest

These two Detroit shops will be stocked full of locally made gifts for Mother’s Day, including fresh-cut tulips from Coriander Kitchen & Farm, boxed cookies from Sister Pie, and caramels from Le Bon Garcon. Fridays at the Station at Michigan Central 

A special Mother’s Day edition of Fridays at the Station features all-woman jazz group Straight Ahead with renowned bassist and recent Kresge Eminent Artist Marion Hayden, plus Alina Morr on keys, drummer Gayelynn McKinney on drums, Ingrid Racine on trumpet, and singer Kymberli Wright. “Straight Ahead will present a celebration of women as creatives, composers, arrangers and conceptualists,” Hayden said in a statement. “The band will open a musical conversation, engaging the audience in themes of womanhood, power and intentionally creating a space where women are uplifted.” The group will perform two sets with a DJ erika.irie in between. 6-10 p.m. Fri. $15. 2001 15th Street, Detroit. friday-night-at-the-station-mvgqi.tripleseattickets.com/registration/select. 

Two Funny Mamas Live at Sound Board 

Comedians Sherri Shepherd and Kym Whitley bring their podcast “Two Funny Mamas” live to the stage of the Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel to kick off Mother’s Day weekend. 8 p.m. Fri. Remaining seats start at $64.65. 2901 Grand River, Detroit. 313presents.com.

“Hairspray” at Players Guild of Dearborn

Travel back to 1960s Baltimore, where teen queen Tracy Turnblad is rising to the top. Miniature Golf at Cranbrook Art Museum

Artist-designed mini golf returns to Cranbrook for a fifth season. The course includes nine custom-designed and art-inspired holes on the grounds of Cranbrook Art Museum. Moms and special adults can golf for free on Saturday and Sunday. The attraction will be up through Sept. 27. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat.-Sun. $15, $10 members and Detroit residents, $8 kids younger than 12. Art Birmingham at Shain Park

Now in its 45th year, this outdoor art fair is expected to attract 20,000 people. Along with a juried art show, there are also food trucks, activities, and entertainment. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sat. And 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sun. Downtown Birmingham. theguild.org/fair/art-birmingham.

Backyard Art Fair in Oak Park and Ferndale

More than 40 houses in Ferndale and Oak Park will host a pop-up art and craft studios featuring more than 200 artists. The event is part neighborhood stroll, open-air art gallery and open house studios. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sat. Free. Backyardartfair.com. 

Young Artist Art Fair at Northville Art House

Shop for unique gifts and browse artwork made by young creatives. Proceeds from the event supports the continuation of the Young Artist program at Northville Art House. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sat. $5 suggested donation for adults. Bruno Mars at Ford Field

Mariachi Vargas — Detroit Opera House

This dynamic Mexican ensemble has been entertaining for generations. Founded in 1897, the virtuosos are now led by musical director, vocalist and violinist Carlos Martinez. ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ review: Sequel takes on more than high couture

Fantasia and Anthony Hamilton at Little Caesars Arena

Multi-award-winning recording artist Fantasia Barrino has come a long way since her 2004 run as a finalist on “American Idol.” She was recently named one of Time100’s Most Influential People. Season kick-off at Canton Farmers Market

Cliff Cash at the Magic Bag

Comedian Cliff Cash has won comedy competitions and headlined clubs across the country.
